Is it God’s will or my will? [Questions of a new Believer]

“You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.” James 4:2

This verse outlines the curse of our human condition. The root of all our problems, as it began with Adam and Eve stealing from the tree of knowledge, coveting to know more than what God commanded them. Ultimately, it did not bring them what they wanted, because the enemy lied. It brought them death and separation from God. In the face of their desires, in the face of all our desires, we’re called to ask God first.

I chopped off 10 inches of my own hair and treated it to some highlight. I say this not to toot my own horn or receive any praise. Honestly it’s far from perfect and taught me to break out of my mold and let go of some perfectionism. I do recommend doing the things that (healthily) bring joy where you’ve maybe otherwise been held back by (ungodly) fear.

Not doing anything because of fear that you might do it wrong, or that “God didn’t specifically tell you to do it”, only forms a pressure over yourself to cripple you to live a dull, restricted life within these safe guardrails that God never intended you to be confined.

He provides fullness of joy and life. As a fairly new believer in Christ, it’s been a journey learning what this means for me personally. He’s opened my eyes to my own passions, not that of another Christian, but my uniquely crafted gifts and desires. The ones He’s purposed each of His children to cultivate for His kingdom, by His guidance and strength.

When He reveals a purpose in you, there’s no more room for comparison or competition. You have a purpose divinely placed in you, that no one else can carry out. Accepting to follow Jesus is to negate all fear or storylines that tell you that you can’t succeed where you’ve been called. Though it might not come right away.

The challenge has been finding where I’ve been called. The challenge was discerning what desires in me were created from the world’s storylines and which were righteously valid by God. [Beware of an endless perfectionist pursuit by this ruminating- I’ll need to divulge in another post on this!] Praise the Lord that He’s faithful and has brought an unfolding of one of the main callings He has for me. Stay tuned to witness that unfolding!

He’ll do it for you too if you remain committed to Him. I promise it’s so much better than any of the plans you make on your own. His gift of freedom is available anytime, to anyone.

Getting right with God is like partnering with the good-guy in the movie that holds all the victory in the end, no matter what chaos the enemy inflicted all throughout. Just when you think the good-guy’s defeated or not all he was cracked up to be, again he comes back with the upper hand to catch the enemy off guard and destroy him. He’s the one that has always thought one step ahead of all evil. He will always prosper, no matter what it looks or feels like from our current perspective or experience. So there’s simply no fear in trusting Him.

“As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain, for He says, ‘In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’ I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:8

What blows my mind about this movie of life and God’s will, is that He wants us to be partners with Him. It’s like He’s recruiting us as secret agents to get in on the inside scoop. To know the best choices to make. To know the secret recipe to endlessly peace, love, and joy. Even amidst a world that impatiently partners with hate.

I could almost count it as selfish, for me to give my life to Jesus, regarding all the promises of wisdom and freedom I get to receive in doing so. But that in accepting Him, I couldn’t be selfish because I’m doing exactly what He wants as well. It’s a delight on both ends! Which increasingly blows my mind, because He wants to give ME an eternal life of perfection and rest?! He wants to give me freedom, wisdom, healing, and peace?! This is grace. This is why God never works from an equal-exchange ideology. We can’t ever possibly return the favor of His favor on us. His mercies outnumber my every fiber.

Yes this may have been inspired by just watching Dr. Doolittle. God gives me ideas in every sort of way He has to. He is just that real, living, and active. I hope this encouraged you, whoever you are that needed this today!
